Pro Tip: Match the barrier to your subfloor material. For concrete slabs, use a 6-mil (or thicker) polyethylene film or specialized waterproof underlayment. For wood subfloors, avoid plastic barriers and choose a barrier that reduces vapor flow without trapping moisture.

Moisture barriers are critical because they prevent water vapor, especially from porous subfloors like concrete, from seeping into your flooring. This protection stops materials like wood and laminate from warping, cupping, and molding, while preserving the original qualities of your flooring.

Here are some great tips to help you choose the right moisture barrier for your flooring installation:

If you are installing vinyl, laminate, SPC and engineered wood flooring: You need to protect finished floors against moisture damage. A 6-mil thick polyethylene film like ROBERTS Moisture Barricade is your best choice. Recommended by the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), this is a Class 1 moisture barrier over concrete subfloors. It features a convenient adhesive strip to help join the film seams and seal out moisture, making it great to use also with standard underlayments as an additional layer of moisture protection.

If you are installing solid, engineered or laminate wood floors, or floating vinyl plank floors: You need to reduce vapor flow without trapping moisture.  An underlayment like ROBERTS Silicone Moisture Barrier Underlayment, designed to protect floors from moisture, without trapping it underneath the floor covering is your best choice. It is made from 100 percent recycled contents that are environmentally safe, and a baked silicone coating that provides moisture impermeability under wood flooring.

If you are installing ceramic, porcelain or stone over cement board, plywood or concrete, or finished or unfinished wood floors over plywood or concrete: You need an underlayment like ROBERTS Aquabar "B" Moisture Vapor Barrier that slows moisture migration and helps prevent buckling, cupping, and cracking. Aquabar "B" blocks moisture vapor from creeping underneath finish materials ,or from reaching moisture sensitive substrates, to increase the useful life and appearance of surface finishes.
